Editorial overview
Plan My Walk is a model of task-based outdoor planning for New Zealand. A user can find or draw a track, choose dates, inspect terrain and facilities, receive MetService warnings, Department of Conservation alerts, avalanche forecasts and special notices, then adapt a gear list. The finished trip plan can be shared with group members and a trusted emergency contact. Track, hut and campsite pages also include community reviews while preserving links to official booking information.
NZMSC is equally clear about what the service does not do. It is not a navigation replacement, does not ordinarily work offline for new alerts, and does not contact emergency services when a party is late. Police do not continuously watch private plans. Forecast availability also shortens as a trip date moves farther out. Download or print the plan, carry a map or GPS plus a suitable emergency communicator, and brief the trusted contact on the response threshold. Community reviews can add context, but current DOC closures and official warnings take priority.
