Editorial overview
OpenDroneMap is the processing layer for pilots who want an inspectable, self-hostable route from images to geospatial data. ODM accepts aerial photographs and optional ground-control points, then can generate a georeferenced point cloud, textured mesh, orthophoto, digital surface model and terrain model. Its surrounding tools add APIs and distributed processing, while detailed documentation explains flight overlap, camera models, parameters and the files written at each stage.
Open source does not make weak capture geometry accurate. Uniform vegetation, water, motion blur, rolling shutter, poor overlap and inaccurate image positions can damage reconstruction, and high-resolution projects may demand substantial memory and storage. A visually clean orthophoto is not proof of survey-grade absolute accuracy. Plan capture for the surface, use independent checkpoints or control where required, read the processing report and inspect gaps and edge distortion. Also review the AGPL obligations before embedding the engine in a network service.
