Coffee Sustainability Reference Code

The Coffee Sustainability Reference Code supplies a shared vocabulary before organizations choose programs or claims. Its economic dimension covers farm management, services and integrity; the social dimension addresses childhood, human rights, working conditions and community; environmental principles include biodiversity, pest management, conservation, pollution and climate. Beneath twelve principles sit practices and expected results that companies, producer groups, donors, governments and financial institutions can use to align initiatives. An equivalence mechanism relates recognized schemes to the baseline.

The code is a framework, not an audit of a bag of coffee. Adoption, assurance quality, remediation and public reporting determine whether principles change conditions. Its simplified baseline cannot capture every country's law or community priority, and the tools were undergoing review in 2026, so version dates matter. Users should not convert alignment into an unsupported consumer certification claim. The code is most helpful for comparing program architecture and finding omissions, followed by evidence about implementation, outcomes and whose perspective was included.
