Foundry Virtual Tabletop is software the game host runs rather than a shared subscription website. A purchased license can operate one game server at a time, and players connect through ordinary browsers without buying their own copies. Core features include battle maps, character sheets, dice, dynamic lighting, fog of war, audio, voice or video and interactive regions. Game systems and modules extend rules automation and presentation, while self-hosting gives the owner direct control over campaign data and backups.

That control brings administration. The host must install updates, arrange networking or paid hosting, protect backups and check whether modules still work with a new core release. Rich automation can also turn preparation into software configuration, and third-party packages are not guaranteed by the core team. The license is a one-time purchase, but hosting and premium content may add other costs. Foundry is exceptionally capable for a group willing to maintain its table; people prioritizing instant setup may prefer a lighter hosted room.
