Editorial overview
The National Water Dashboard turns the USGS gage network into a map an angler can use before visiting a river, reservoir or lake. It defaults to streamflow, but layers also cover gage height, groundwater, precipitation and flood information; individual stations open a current value and time-series graph. That makes it possible to compare today's discharge with recent conditions instead of relying on a vague report that a river is high or low. Linked Water Data services support longer histories and API access.
A gage reports conditions at one instrument, not throughout an entire watershed. Flow can change below tributaries or dams, flood stages are unavailable at some sites, and water temperature is not measured everywhere. Read the timestamp and parameter units, choose a station that actually represents the reach, and check local access or emergency closures separately. Historical correlation can inform planning, but it cannot prove that a particular discharge will produce fish at a chosen spot.
