Editorial overview
BirdLife DataZone starts where a field checklist ends: what does this species or place mean for conservation? The portal connects bird profiles with extinction risk, population information, threats, actions, countries, flyways and Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas. Its search can move from a species to sites central to its survival, or from a country to conservation priorities. For analytical work, global distribution data cover more than eleven thousand bird species, with metadata and Area of Habitat products that refine broad ranges using habitat and elevation information.
These maps are decision layers, not promises that a bird occurs at every point inside a polygon. Distribution boundaries combine expert assessment with available records, releases follow Red List update cycles, and the most sensitive species may be withheld. A visiting birder must still check current access, local season and recent observations. DataZone is therefore less useful for finding tomorrow morning's exact bird than for understanding why a flyway, site or declining population matters. It provides the conservation frame that sighting-focused services often leave implicit.
