AGA International Aquascaping Contest

The AGA International Aquascaping Contest preserves more than a winner's podium. Run by the nonprofit Aquatic Gardeners Association, it connects the current competition with a legacy showcase reaching back to 2000. Categories extend beyond a single nature-aquarium aesthetic and can include aquatic gardens by volume, biotopes, Dutch layouts and wabi-kusa. Browsing complete years lets a learner compare plant handling, hardscape restraint, photography and composition across ordinary entries as well as prize recipients. The active site also publishes the present schedule and submission guidance.

Contest pages are inspiration, not construction manuals. A photograph may omit equipment and long-term upkeep, while category definitions and judging priorities change over time. Historical images can also have limited technical notes or older plant names. A high placement reflects the judges' assessment under that year's rules, not an objective welfare score or proof that every species combination should be reproduced. The archive is most valuable when viewers annotate what they observe and then test a modest design principle in their own conditions rather than attempting to clone an entire display.
